Alice Jane Dewell Obituary

Washington - Alice Dewell died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on October 23, 2024. Alice was born in Tacoma to Charles A. Palmer and Jenny Parry Palmer. During the First World War, her father was a Canadian officer, and her mother a Registered Nurse from Wales who served in France. Alice attended Stadium High School in Tacoma. She took piano lessons from age 6 and played beautifully into her last years. Alice attended University of Puget Sound under a scholarship, taught elementary school In Seattle, and then became a legal secretary. She met Julian "Pete" Dewell at a dance in 1954, when Pete was stationed at the Bremerton Naval Station, awaiting sea duty. They became engaged and Pete's ship left for San Diego. Alice and Pete were married, after Pete's release from the Navy in 1954, shortly before Pete began law school at the University of Washington. Alice and Pete had three girls, Gwen, Jane, and Laura, and lived in Everett, from 1962 until moving to Seattle to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren in 2006.

During her years of raising children and making a home, Alice played piano and sang in the Everett and Marysville Unitarian Fellowships. In Seattle, she sang in the Magnolia Choir. Alice was an activist and a co-chair of the Everett American Association of the United Nations. She stood against the Viet Nam war, was a member and then Chairman of the Everett Planning Commission, and the Western Regional Coordinator of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.

Alice loved to travel, planning and coordinating all details for trips to England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and The Gambia. Alice was also an excellent cook and hosted many social gatherings.

Even during Alice's final years in memory care, her interest and care for others and friendly manner continued to shine as she graciously greeted everyone she saw, asked about their families and made social introductions every day.

Alice will be missed by her family and many friends. A celebration of her life will be announced at a future date. Any contributions in honor of Alice should be made to your favorite charity.
