Alice Dorothy Hingston Obituary

Alice (Howe) Hingston passed peacefully in her sleep on June 9, one week shy of her 96th birthday. She was born and lived her life in Seattle, except for one fun-filled year in San Francisco after her graduation from the University of Washington in 1948. Alice married Bill Hingston (deceased) in 1953, and together they raised their five children, Patty (Roger) Vermilion, Charlie (Melanie) Hingston, Joe (Terry) Hingston, Phil (Debbie) Hingston and Mary Lou (Cary) Evans in the Wedgwood neighborhood of Seattle.

As the children got older, she went to work in the Taxpayer Services division of the IRS where she greatly enjoyed making the complicated easy and helping people complete their tax returns.

Alice was the icon of the family and always the consummate hostess dedicated to her family, her faith and her regular bridge game. She became Catholic in 1952 and was a dedicated member of Our Lady of the Lake and St. Bridget parishes, serving in the Maids of Mary Guild and ironing the church linens - while of course hosting countless sports team dinners with her famous spaghetti casserole and baking a seemingly endless supply of chocolate chip cookies and Scotcharoos. All recipes that survive her!

She formed many life-long friendships at Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington, especially with her Gamma Phi sisters. After marrying Bill, she spent the next two summers in Alaska with him while he worked non-stop in a fish processing plant before putting her foot down to insist on spending her summers in Seattle instead while Bill toiled up north. Alice and her children spent many of those summers at idyllic Warm Beach where they and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren spent hours walking the beach, exploring the mud flats, swimming and enjoying one of the very first pickleball courts.

Alice is survived by her children Patty, Joe, Phil and Mary Lou, as well as 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, and her sister Willa. She was predeceased by Bill; her son Charlie; her brother Chuck, and her sister Mary.

We thank the amazing staff at Mirabella Retirement Community for their care and concern through every level of care available.

A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, June 20 at 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 8900 35th Ave NE, Seattle with a reception following.

Alice (and Bill) loved to help their community and would have asked memorials to be sent to either Northwest Harvest at northwestharvest.org or Farestart at farestart.org.
