CAMERON A. HASLAM Obituary

WA - The world lost a good man with the passing of Cameron Haslam on February 2, 2025, at the age of 95. Cam was born in Tacoma, Washington, on June 16, 1929, to Albert and Odra Haslam, joining big sister Barbara. He was an avid fan of Tacoma and remained friends his entire life with his hometown buddies.

Cam graduated from Stadium High School, where he was on the baseball, basketball, and swim teams. He earned his BA in Education from the University of Puget Sound (UPS). "Big Cam" enjoyed his time in college, including playing baseball and basketball for the Loggers, serving as president of Kappa Sigma and on the UPS Central Board, and participating in numerous other college activities. Perhaps most importantly, he met Esther Voegelein at UPS. They married in 1953 and remained married until Esther's passing in 2013. Together they raised four children.

Cam served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and then returned to UPS to obtain his Masters in Recreation Administration. He was offered contracts with two professional baseball teams (this was back before there was a baseball draft), but opted to start his career in the recreation field. After a few years with the City of Kennewick Parks & Recreation Department, Cam and Esther moved to Bellevue where they resided for 57 years. Cam joined Boeing and served as a Recreation Director for over 35 years. Boeing had numerous clubs during his time there, such as the Golf Club, World Wide (Travel) Club, Wine Club, and Camping Club, and Cam loved collaborating with the club participants both in his role as Recreation Director and sometimes as a participant himself. Cam also umpired high school basketball games on the side and was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Basketball Officials Association Hall of Fame.

He prized and was very involved in the Washington Recreation & Park Association, serving as its president and subsequently being awarded an Honor Fellow Award, Distinguished Service Award, and the President's Award. In retrospect, Cam served in a leadership role in connection with practically every activity in which he was involved, including the National Industrial Recreation Association (State Chairman of the Year Award), National Recreation and Park Association (Regional Council Chairman), Bellevue Christian Church Board (president and elder), UPS Alumni Board of Directors, Camp Fire Board (Ernest Thompson Seton Award), YMCA of Seattle Board, Edgebrook Swim and Tennis Club Board (president and founding member), and his neighborhood community organization. He was not, however, someone who ever spoke about his accomplishments (well, except perhaps for a couple holes-in-one on the golf course), so there are undoubtedly many of which his family is unaware.

Cam was a friendly, happy, kind, and loyal person who genuinely enjoyed people. He got great joy from any sporting event (preferably one involving a grandchild), golf, tennis, travel, volunteering, the daily newspaper, peanut butter & lettuce sandwiches, all sweets, and his family and friends always.

His family would like to thank Elizabeth Benedetto and the health aides at MorningSide Adult Family Home in Seattle, who took such good care of Cam his last three years.

Cam was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Esther; and his son, Gary. He is survived by his sons, Lee (Kathy) Haslam and Rick Haslam; his daughter, Connie Haslam; Gary's widow, Marlene Jenkins (Willy); his grandchildren, Sarah, Abby (Colin), Cameron (Claire), and Aubrey Haslam; and many extended family members.

A memorial service will be held at Northwest Christian Church, 7503 18th Ave. NW, Seattle, on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 3:00 pm.

Memorial donations may be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center or the National Parks Conservation Association.
