Carol A. Mowery, M.D. (Cammy) Obituary

WA - Carol (Cammy as she was known) died peacefully in the loving arms of her husband of 22 years, William (Bill) G. McGillin, surrounded by the love of family, her many friends, and the legions of people whose lives she touched. She suffered a short illness. The world is a better place for Cammy having lived in it.

Cammy was born in Yakima, Washington, the daughter of Dr. Charles Rothells Mowery (deceased) and Dorothy Hellenthal Mowery (deceased). She graduated from Mercer Island High School. She was a 4th generation Seattleite.

She attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, California (delighting in the Stanford in Germany program), and the University of Washington (BA). At the UW, she was a Sorority President, and was named to Phi Beta Kappa, oldest honor society in the US. She attained her medical degree at the University of Washington, after which she completed a 5 year residency in Orthopedics at UC San Diego where she was selected Outstanding Resident of her class. She then completed a Pediatric Orthopedic fellowship at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, Texas, and upon her return to Seattle, practiced with Group Health Cooperative in Seattle and went on to practice at Swedish Hospital and Children's Hospital, also in Seattle. As a woman in orthopedic surgery, Cammy was a pioneer. Cammy's profound skill, empathy, and humor characterized her care for patients ranging from routine cases to those even her colleagues found most difficult. She declined sabbaticals to assure consistent care for "her kids" (her patients). She tirelessly shared the gift of her expert care with all who sought her professional help, at work and otherwise.

Cammy was an avid athlete with many additional interests. A nationally ranked tennis player in young days, Cammy played until just before her sudden final illness. She was an expert sailor, skier, weaver, and knitter of beautiful complex projects. Her garden featured an "ICU" where she nurtured ailing plants back to health. Her yachting trips with Bill to the San Juans and throughout Puget Sound and the Gulf Islands in their favorite boat, POACH, created treasured lovely memories. She served for years as an officer of the Queen City Yacht Club. In retirement, she and Bill savored winter getaways in Palm Springs, surrounded by the desert beauty and good living they so richly deserved.

She leaves her husband, William G. McGillin, siblings David (Janet) Mowery and Virginia (Brian) Handly. She is predeceased by her brother Bruce Mowery. Her Mowery nephews, Paul (Jill) Handly and Arthur (known as AJ) Handly fondly remember their Aunt Cammy as a wise advisor, encourager, and superb cook.

She was beloved by many and will be sorely missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at a time to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations to The Fred Hutch Cancer Center would be much appreciated.
