Clair attended Broadway High School and graduated from Garfield High School. He joined the Navy, fighting in the Korean War, serving as a Electronics Technician First Class, and earning 3 medals during his time of service. Clair left the Navy in 1955, and a few days later married his wife, Ruth. He attended the University of Washington, obtaining his BA in Electrical Engineering, and worked 37 years at Boeing on a variety of projects. Clair enjoyed classical music, local football, and Sounders soccer. He volunteered for Boy Scouts, and youth soccer, serving as a volunteer referee.
Clair is preceded in death by his sister; his youngest son; and his wife, Ruth. He is survived by his oldest son, 2 daughters; and a grandson.
