On April 15, 2024 Clint Hattrup passed away peacefully in Seattle, just shy of his 94th birthday. Clint was born in Keuterville, Idaho on June 24, 1930 to Ben and Marie (Schurmann); he was the third of six children.
The family later moved to The Dalles, Oregon and then to Portland. Clint attended St. Mary's High School in The Dalles, then Central Catholic High School in Portland for his junior and senior years. Obtaining the highest exam score among PNW Catholic high school seniors earned him a scholarship at Seattle University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in accounting in 1952. During his years at SU he was vice-president of Alpha Sigma Nu, National Treasurer of the Intercollegiate Knights, and student body president (according to an article in the school paper his private campaign motto was "more beer for the masses"). He was an avid basketball fan and proud season ticket holder and benefactor of SU basketball for many years.
Clint went on to graduate from the University of San Francisco Law School in 1955 and fulfilled his military obligation in Japan from 1956-57. Upon returning from duty, he joined Seattle law firm Olwell and Boyle, where he soon became a partner.
In his free time, Clint loved to play bridge, fly fish, and hunt upland game birds. In 1992, as a member of the Washington Athletic Club bridge team, he competed at the North American Bridge Championships in Toronto. He continued to play until shortly before his death.
He was gregarious and social with a quick wit and loved visiting with friends and family—though his phone calls were notoriously brief. Fiercely independent, he lived on his own until he was 93. He was a voracious reader and especially loved reading to his grandkids. Jann, his wife of 35 years, observed, "Your dad was a great father, but he was born to be a grandfather."
Clint was preceded in death by his youngest son, Ben and his brothers Gerald, Ken, Wayne and Bob. He is survived by his former wife, Jann (Elleflot) Hattrup, and children and grandchildren: Julie (Leroy) Jenkins, Scott and Jamie; Mike (Claudia) Hattrup, Axel and Isabella; Peter (Heather) Hattrup, Karli and Bailey; Tim (Heather) Hattrup and Kai; Ben's family: Gray, Dodge and Adele Hattrup; his sister, Gladine Hattrup; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Seattle University's Chapel of St. Ignatius on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center or a charity of your choice.
