Dennis Emil Appelman Obituary

Seattle, Washington - Dennis and his older twin sister, by ten minutes (Debbie), were born in Scottsbluff, NB, August 2nd, 1954 to parents Sam and Dorothy Appelman. Throughout his life, he was loved by his siblings: Sandra Blaser, Fred Appelman, Bonnie Doherty and Debbie Appelman. This was in addition to his many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

Dennis was a character, with a mischievous spirit. He could skillfully imitate others with wit and humor. Despite being nonverbal, he had a remarkable capacity for commanding a room and never met a stranger. Like a skilled politician, he was known to "work the line" with handshakes and hellos, in any location, whether it was his favorite hamburger joint, where he may enjoy his favorite palate: burger, fries and a coke, or a movie theater. His greatest attribute was his ability to bring joy to others.

He loved music, airplanes, hotdogs, dinosaurs and movies. Dennis was born with Down syndrome but with the heart of a musician, pilot, paleontologist, or perhaps a Star Wars character. He devoured National Geographic magazines with vigor.

His accomplishments included developing a soulful artistic talent. This talent was fostered through Opportunity Resources of Missoula, MT. His works were displayed at an international art show in Europe as well as the office of Montana Representative Pat Williams in Washington, DC.

Dennis's family would like to extend the deepest gratitude to the many wonderful caregivers throughout his life. These caring individuals included the Calderon Adult Family Home, in Seattle, WA; where he enjoyed living for 13 yrs. Additionally, we wish to acknowledge and thank the caregivers of Foss Nursing Home, in Seattle, WA, as well as the Opportunity Resources community in Missoula, MT.

One week shy of 67 years old, Dennis passed away in Seattle, WA, with his sister Debbie and her wife Christy Hunter by his side. Given the love and fullness he brought to the lives of others, he more than exceeded the expectations of the medical prognosis given at his time of birth, which was that he was unlikely to walk, talk or live past the age of five.

We are all grateful for the years and many memories we have all shared with Dennis as a part of our lives. His humble gifts were of the most elemental nature to the human spirit. Thank you Dennis, you were loved by many and will be missed by all.
