Douglas James Graham

Douglas Graham passed away on July 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Doug possessed a quiet strength and unwavering dedication to serving others, traits evident in every aspect of his life. His humility, kindness, and steadfast commitment positively impacted all who knew him.

Born on January 1, 1944, in Woodland, WA, to Harold and Laura (Colpitts) Graham, Doug grew up on the family dairy farm in Kent, WA, and graduated from Kent-Meridian High School in 1962. After briefly attending Central Washington University, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Panama and Vietnam. Following his discharge in 1967, Doug completed his education at San Jose State University, graduating in 1971 with a B.A. in Mathematics and earning his teaching credential in 1972.

In 1968, Doug married Joan Weinbrecht, and they enjoyed nearly 57 years together filled with family, animals, friends and adventures.

Doug returned to Washington after college to teach math and coach Judo in the Kent School District. Although formally retired in 2002, Doug continued working as a substitute teacher and full-time coach for another 20+ years.

Introduced to Judo in high school, Doug maintained a lifelong passion for the sport as athlete, coach, referee and organizer. The highlight of his competitive career was earning Grand Champion honors at the 1972 National AAU Championship Tournament, but his true legacy lies in the countless athletes and coaches he mentored; sharing his knowledge, wisdom and love for the sport.

In addition to Judo, Doug pursued numerous other interests; farming, hiking, skiing, camping, and playing bagpipes with the Clan Gordon Pipe Band. He served on the board of the Tacoma Highland Games Association and was a dedicated member of Kent Lutheran Church.

Doug is survived by his wife, Joan; brother, Bruce (Vicki); sister, Judy; son, Mark (Laura); daughter, Kelly (Joe); granddaughters Morgan, Kirsten, and Charlotte; and his beloved Labrador, Angus.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 9th, at Kent Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Washington State Interscholastic Judo Association or Kent Lutheran Church.
