Sammamish, WA - Edward Anthony McHugh Jr., known affectionately to friends and family as Ed, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2025, in Sammamish, Washington. Born on September 3, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ed's life journey was marked by dedication, love, and a touch of humor that endeared him to all who knew him.
On August 3, 1968, Ed married the love of his life, Suellen Mondale, and together they built a family founded on love, laughter, and unwavering support. Their union was blessed with three sons: Edward T., married to Emily, with grandchildren Madalyn and Denali; Patrick, married to Carolyn, with grandchildren Ellie, Kellan, and Meghan; and Todd, married to Debora, with grandchildren Owen and Lucca.
The joys of his life were his family, and he embraced every moment with his cherished grandchildren.
The son of the late Edward Anthony McHugh Sr. and Anne Marrie Noble, Ed grew up in a lively household alongside his siblings Susie, Maureen, the late Michael, and the late Timothy. He grew up predominately in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania although spent some time in Honolulu HI and Midway Island with his fathers deployments. His early education was at Cardinal Dougherty High School in Philadelphia, and after his service in the Navy, his passion for design led him to study Architecture at Drexel University, where he honed his skills and prepared for a successful career.
In 1962, while serving his country in the Navy, he was aboard the USS Kearsarge carrier during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the Caribbean and in the historic recovery of the Mercury-Atlas 6 after its first crewed orbital spaceflight. This experience instilled in him a lifelong interest in American military history and a sense of patriotism that he carried with pride.
Professionally, Ed was a respected architect, proudly self-employed and licensed in five states. His innovative designs and charismatic leadership in the industry were a testament to his expertise and dedication to his craft. Ed was not just an architect by profession but also by temperament, designing his life with intention and purpose.
He was funny, thoughtful, and selfless, always ready with a joke to lighten the mood. While an avid coin collector, it was the time spent with family that he valued above all else, whether it was celebrating milestones or simply enjoying each other's company.
Ed's legacy is one of laughter, compassion, and selflessness, traits that he instilled in his sons and witnessed flourishing in his grandchildren. His influence will continue to be felt through the lives he touched, the buildings he crafted, and the love he shared.
The loss of Edward Anthony McHugh Jr. will be deeply felt by his family, friends, and all who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have been a part of his remarkable life. We bid farewell to a man who was not only masterful in his trade but also masterful in his role as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Ed's story is one of a life beautifully designed and lovingly built.
Friends and family will be notified of a celebration of life gathering taking place in the spring 2026.
