Elizabeth Goodfellow Engle Obituary

WA - Elizabeth Goodfellow Engle, 97, passed away peacefully at her Edmonds-area home on December 21, 2025. Born Helen Elizabeth Goodfellow on February 14, 1928 in Wenatchee, Washington, she was the daughter of a founding partner of Goodfellow Bros., an early excavation contractor on the Grand Coulee Dam and builder of highways and infrastructure across the Pacific Northwest. After earning an English degree from the University of Washington and later a teaching certificate, Elizabeth taught high school in the Seattle area before joining the U.S. State Department. She served at the U.S. embassy in Rome in the early 1950s, and later with intelligence agencies in Washington D.C. during the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Upon returning to Seattle, Elizabeth worked with renowned architect Paul Thiry and was active in the preservation of Pacific Northwest maritime history. In 1963, Elizabeth married Allen William Engle and devoted herself to raising their two sons while helping nurture three stepsons from Allen's prior marriage. A lifetime member of the Seattle Yacht Club, avid photographer, world traveler and meticulous editor of historical biographies, Elizabeth lived a life of quiet adventure and intellectual pursuits, with a deep devotion to her family and its genealogy. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her devoted husband Allen, her loving parents George Herbert Goodfellow and Helen Child Goodfellow, as well as two brothers George Herbert "Bert" Goodfellow Jr. and David Child Goodfellow. She is survived by her sons Allen Richard Engle, William Parsons Engle (Nanci), Frederick John Engle (Kathy), Brian Goodfellow Engle (Diane Budres), and Stephen Child Engle (Jessica Kam); grandchildren Benjamin (in loving memory), Rebecca, Chaz and Caitlin (children of Allen Richard); Samuel, Philip, Kevin, Sierra and Casey (children of Frederick John); and Yvette (daughter of Stephen Child); as well as numerous great grandchildren, nephews and nieces, and a wide circle of friends who cherished her warmth and grace.

Memorial services for the family will be held at a later date.
