Eugene "Gene" French Summy, a man of kindness, optimism, and generosity, passed away peacefully due to natural causes on May 12, 2025, in Mountlake Terrace, Washington, at the venerable age of 94. Born on June 25, 1930, in Long Beach, California, to parents A.P. Summy and Frances (French) Summy, Gene's life was marked by loving kindness, a spirit of service, and a legacy of leadership.
Gene's formative years were spent in Seattle, where he attended Roosevelt High School. He continued his education at the University of Washington, earning a Bachelor's in Business Administration. He also served his country as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, where he was honored with the National Defense Service Medal.
Gene's education served as the foundation for what would become a successful and enduring enterprise, the Gene Summy Lumber Company, founded in 1955 and still thriving today.
Family was the cornerstone of Gene's life. He was a devoted husband to his wife of 62 years, Mercedes (Gales) Summy and a loving father to his daughters Theresa Jovanovich, Pamela Summy, and Michelle Dunn. He was a cherished grandfather to Jacob Jovanovich (Rachael), Emily Thompson (Isaiah), Delaney Dunn, and Jackson Dunn. His joy was further multiplied by his great-grandchildren Olivia Jade, Eleanor Louise, and Violet Jean. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ann Brown, but his legacy of love continues to be felt by all who were touched by his presence.
Gene's faith was a guiding force throughout his life, and he dedicated himself to lifelong service and ministry at St. Luke's Catholic Church as well as Holy Rosary parish. His commitment extended beyond the walls of the church as he served the community as an usher, a marriage preparation counselor, prayer minister, and mentor to many. His ability to inspire and guide others was one of his most remarkable traits.
An avid sports fan, Gene cheered with unwavering enthusiasm for the Huskies and the Seahawks. His love for sports however was not limited to the sidelines; he was a lifelong athlete who enjoyed the competitive thrill of racquetball and the joy of playing golf. Gene's competitive streak and love for games were also evident in his reputation as a card shark, a title he carried with pride and humor.
Gene's love for children and animals was evident to all who knew him. His playful nature and welcoming demeanor made him a favorite among the younger generations and a trusted friend to every family pet. His ability to connect with the pure and innocent spirits of children and animals spoke volumes about his own heart.
We all benefited greatly from Gene's generous spirit. He was not only a successful business owner but provided support and encouragement to the community around him. His ability to see the best in people and situations, coupled with his willingness to share his time and resources allowed him to provide unwavering support to his family, friends and community.
Gene Summy's life was one of purpose and joy. His was a journey marked by deep relationships, a commitment to service, and an unshakable positive outlook. As we remember Gene, we are reminded of the profound impact one individual can have on the lives of many. His kindness, optimism, and generosity have left an indelible mark on his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.
Eugene French Summy will be deeply missed, yet his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. In his memory, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life that exemplified the very best of what it means to be human.
