Gary Stokes Moore Obituary

WA - Gary Stokes Moore of Kingston, Washington passed away on January 23, 2026, after a year and a half battle with pancreatic cancer.

A true Seattleite and lifelong Husky, Gary was born in 1943 to Bennett and Emily (Stokes) Moore. Raised in West Seattle alongside his younger sister Marilyn, he graduated from West Seattle High School in 1961. Gary attended the University of Washington where he joined the Theta Chi fraternity, studied Political Science, met his late wife Margaret (Shotwell) Moore of Fargo, ND, and made lifelong friends. After graduating in 1965, Gary joined the Marine Corps and was sent east for training. He and Margaret married in Fargo in July of 1966, and thereafter lived in Virginia and Barstow, CA. In 1968, Gary was deployed to Vietnam where he served as a Supply Officer working his way up to Captain, while Margaret returned to Fargo to welcome first son Craig Shotwell Moore.

Following his military service, Gary and Margaret returned to the PNW in 1969 and settled in Bellevue where they welcomed second son Andrew Bennett Moore in 1971. Leveraging his logistics experience from the Marine Corps, Gary serendipitously took a position in Materials Management at the Kenworth Truck Company in Seattle, which led to a distinguished career at PACCAR. In his over three decades with the company, Gary served as Plant Manager at Dart Truck Company in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Kenworth plants in both Chillicothe, Ohio and Seattle; General Manager of Kenworth Truck Company; President of Wagner Mining in Portland; and ultimately Senior Vice President at PACCAR Inc. He retired in 2002 with Margaret and immediately commissioned a custom red golf cart with a Kenworth T2000 hood to use at his winter home in La Quinta, California.

In his youth, Gary developed a lifelong love of the outdoors, boating, fishing and all things Pacific Northwest. He spent time at his grandparents' cabin in Kingston, and later he and Margaret built a cabin on the property that later became his permanent home. He was happiest on the water and owned several (progressively larger) power boats till the end of his life. He spent most summers in retirement captaining the Moore Fun to remote parts of Canada where the salmon fishing was best, as well as trips to Alaska and around Vancouver Island. A Husky football season ticket holder for more than 40 years, he traveled to Houston in 2024 to witness the Huskies' first appearance in the CFP National Championship. Gary spent retirement winters in La Quinta, where he enjoyed golf, cycling, hiking, and reading, and made many friends who enriched his life. He was incredibly well traveled and visited over 75 countries.

Gary was also a beloved father to his two boys and their wives, and "Papa" to three grandchildren. He will be lovingly remembered for his wisdom, intellect, sage guidance, compassion... and neatness!

He was predeceased by his wife Margaret in 2007. He is survived by his sons Craig (Stephanie Krimmel) Moore and Andrew (Cori) Moore; his grandchildren Toby and Margaret Moore, and Bailley Krimmel; and his sister Marilyn (Nick) Sollazo.

Gary's family will host a Celebration of Life at the Seattle Yacht Club on Thursday May 7th at 4:00 PM.
