A beloved son, cherished husband, devoted father and grandfather, loyal brother, and steadfast friend—passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025, at the age of 77. Born and raised in West Seattle, Gary established his lifelong home on Lake Sammamish in Redmond with his beloved wife, Pat, his soulmate of 52 wonderful years.
Gary's life was guided by a profound commitment to his faith and community. As an active and devoted member of St. Jude Parish in Redmond, his service was tireless and heartfelt. He served on the Pastoral Council, was an usher, worked with the Knights of Columbus, helped raise funds to build the church in the 1970s, and contributed countless hours to parish events and projects. His dedication was always selfless, reflecting a deep desire to assist those around him.
A true man of action, Gary was celebrated for his diverse talents—he was an engineer, builder, mechanic, skilled problem-solver, and lifelong learner. He gave freely of his time, knowledge, and skills, always ready to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors on any project they undertook.
Professionally, Gary established an enduring legacy as the founder and longtime Executive Director of the Independent Business Association (IBA). He served as a passionate and effective advocate for small businesses across Washington for more than five decades, working tirelessly to give thousands of entrepreneurs a strong, clear voice.
Above all, Gary cherished his family. He and Pat shared a remarkable 52 years together, raising two daughters and embracing the joy of being grandparents. Together, they treasured time with their grandchildren and nurtured a spirit of adventure, building lasting memories through travel.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Smith; his devoted daughters, Michelle Thomsen and Danielle O'Neal; his adored grandchildren, Taylor, Ava, and Elle Thomsen, and Jack O'Neal; and his siblings, Glen Smith and Madeleine Fraley. He also leaves behind a wide circle of extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Alice Smith.
