Washington - Gerd Odny Ostrem was born in Bergen, Norway. She passed away peacefully in Seattle at the Blue Ridge Adult Family Home at the age of 98. Seeking a better life, Gerd immigrated to the United States in 1948. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage and even prouder to be an American. Speaking no English, she quickly learned the language and began a life of hard work and determination. Gerd often bested those around her, proving the mantra of the immigrant story that hard work, dependability and determination would carry the day. She was an accomplished insurance underwriter for over 30 years. In 1951 she met and married Peer J. Ostrem and they were married for nearly 40 years until his death in 1991.
Gerd was devoted to her grandsons, Eyvind and Finn. She is survived by her son, Michael, (Kristine), grandsons, Eyvind (Hannah) and Finn. She is also survived by her brother, Hermod, of Alesund Norway and sister, Magne, of Orchard Park, New York.
A memorial service honoring her life will be held at her church of 65 years, Magnolia Lutheran, 2414 31st Ave W, Seattle, WA 98199 on Sunday May 22nd at 1pm.
