Hilda Golub Solomon (Anne) Obituary

WA - Hilda ("Anne") Solomon died on January 1, 2026, in Seattle, Washington.

Anne was born on January 22, 1924, in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York to Rose and Jacob Golub. Jacob was a prominent American Jewish educator and writer, and Rose was a writer, educator and artist. Her family lived in New York City and Cincinnati. She lived in Palestine for three years in the late 1920s. During the ongoing conflict, she remembered that her car was once hit by gunfire.

In school, Anne excelled in science and won a school prize in physics. She was known for her athletic ability - her baseball career peaked in high school! Anne was an accomplished pianist and studied at Julliard prior to college. She was popular at parties for her ability to improvise popular tunes. In 1940, she attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, where she met and later married Arthur Solomon. Anne obtained an MSW from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA from Western Washington University.

Anne began a long career in social work in Chico, California in the mid-1950s. For over 40 years, she was a case worker and director of social work for NGOs, four different hospitals, county and state governments, and in private practice. Anne had an extraordinary work ethic - she was reserved, but proactively accomplished her career goals. She was a stalwart defender of abused children and so her final professional role was with the State of Washington Child Protective Services.

Throughout her life, her work was guided by strong values, high standards, and a profound sense of responsibility to the people and communities she served. She was formally commended for her work in Appalachian Ohio, where she played a key role in helping a poor, isolated community gain formal state recognition as the township of Snyderville, enabling mail delivery and access to essential services. She worked closely with local women, providing reproductive health education and helping them obtain medical and social support that had long been out of reach. Later, she helped the FBI solve a murder on Mercer Island, WA.

Separate from her formal career, Anne was an active reader and participated in numerous book clubs. She became an accomplished painter after training at the Gage Academy in Seattle. A lifelong Democrat, she served as precinct captain and volunteered for the League of Women Voters for many years. She was a member of Temple De Hirsch Sinai in Seattle and loved Jewish traditions.

Anne was an engaged and dedicated parent who, in addition to strong academic achievement, encouraged her children to study classical music, the fine arts, and to spend time outdoors (especially hiking in the Cascade Mountains) and to participate in volunteer activities.

At 89, Anne moved into the Parkshore community in Madison Park where she lived independently until August 2025. Over her long life, she saw the rapid spread of telephones, automobiles, airplanes, space travel, and the Internet. In a recent conversation, she reminisced about the man who delivered large blocks of ice to her home in a horse-drawn cart. What a life!

Anne had four children, Louise, David, Jonathan and Roslyn. She is survived by David, Jonathan and Roslyn, 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
