Hugh Marion Pennington Obituary

WA - Hugh Pennington passed away September 25 at St. Michaels Medical Center in Silverdale with his daughters by his side. He was born January 1, 1942, in Red Oak, Iowa, to Lydia and Marion Pennington.

Hugh grew up in the Midwest, the eldest of four siblings. He graduated from Emerson High in 1959. He attended State College of Iowa (University of Northern Iowa) from 1959-1963. There he met his future wife, Charlotte Macomber. Hugh followed Charlotte back to Portland and they were married March 14, 1964 at Hinson Baptist Church. They had two daughters, Tracey and Kori.

Hugh spent his career teaching math and coaching basketball in the Portland Public School District at Roosevelt, Benson, and Franklin until he retired in 1994. He helped coach four state championship teams and two future NBA players. In retirement, he and Charlotte moved to Port Ludlow, WA closer to his daughters and grandchildren. They travelled extensively throughout the US. Internationally, they particularly enjoyed trips to Australia and Greece. He enthusiastically shared his love for family, basketball, long road trips, live music, and golf, instilling these passions in his daughters and grandchildren. He continued to coach basketball throughout his life, particularly relishing his role as "Coach Grandpa." He loved developing players and was the quintessential gym rat. He also was known for his sense of humor and telling a mean dad joke.

After 55 wonderful years, Hugh sadly lost Charlotte to breast cancer. Over the last few years, he was happy to find companionship, laughs, fun and adventure with longtime friend, Bonnie.

Hugh is survived by his daughters, Tracey Cartwright (Richard) of Bothell, WA and Kori Bryant of Everett, WA; brother Paul Pennington (Jeanie) of Omaha, NE and Phoenix, AZ and sister Donna Quayle (Bruce) of Peoria, IL; beloved grandchildren, Tyler, Austin, Brenna and Lana; his companion, Bonnie Torres of Hemet, CA. In addition to Charlotte, he was predeceased by his parents and sister, Cheryl.

Hugh will be deeply missed and remembered for his kindness, laughter, and unwavering support for those he loved.
