James McGreer Coshow died at age 89 on January 29, 2024. As was his wish, he died at home in Edmonds with his family present.
Jim was born to Birdie and Jim Coshow on January 1, 1935. He was the first baby born in Seattle that year. When his father went to serve in the U.S. Navy during WW II, Jim and his mother and sisters moved to Central Oregon to stay with his grandparents.
After the war, they moved back to Seattle and Jim attended Roosevelt High School, lettering in football and basketball. He graduated from Roosevelt in 1952. He then attended the University of Washington where he majored in business, was a member of the ROTC, and played for the Husky basketball team graduating in 1956.
After college Jim toured much of the world playing for the AAU Buchan Bakers basketball team, then served in the U.S. Airforce and played for the Airforce All-Star basketball team in 1957.
Following his Air Force service, Jim joined his beloved cousin Eddie Dunn working at Dunn Lumber, where he enjoyed his work until his retirement.
Jim married Darlene (nee Weir) in 1960. They had three children, Jim, Tess, and Karen, whom they raised in Marysville, Washington. They later moved to Edmonds, Washington, where they enjoyed living until his death.
Jim had many good friends who meant the world to him, including Jim Prichard, Don Sunitsch, Charlie Koon, Laurence Mosler, Karl Voegtlin, M.D., Doug Campbell, Ron Olsen, Austin Dwyer, Jerry Johnson, and Steve Roake.
He was preceded in death by his dear parents Jim and Birdie; his favorite uncle Bob Coshow; his sister Sheila Richardson, his sister Sharon Sack; his father-in-law Cole Weir, his mother-in-law Pearl Weir; and his brother-in-law Grover Lumbard.
He is survived by his wife Darlene; his son Jim, his daughter Tess and her husband Tim Russell, his daughter Karen; his grandchildren Ashley, Dean, Price, Kathryn, and Frank, and his great-grandchildren Kaden and Harlynn.
