Washington - Legendary Musician James Ervin Pipkin Jr.


James (Jimmy) Ervin Pipkin Jr., 82, of Seattle, WA died on May 31, 2022.


On September 27, 1939, he was born to James Ervin Pipkin Sr. and Beatrice Elizabeth Liggins-Pipkin.


James is survived by his wife and love of 65 years, Dorothea Pipkin, their children Mario Pipkin, Monte Pipkin, Bobbi Jean Pipkin, and Habeebulah Pipkin, and his children Kim Pipkin and Kevin Pipkin Sr. He is also survived by his grandchildren Marcellis Pipkin, Kevin Pipkin Jr., Taurean Pipkin, Tyrah Moss, Perry Pipkin, Mariceo Pipkin, and Ashley Walker as well as his seven great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.


As a lifelong resident of Seattle, James (Jimmy) was a music legend in the Seattle and Los Angeles areas. He was at the forefront of the Doo-Wop era, and he started his first band called The Echo's while still in junior high school. They then became the legendary band, The Gallahads. Jimmy was the lead singer on chart-topping hits such as Lonely Guy, I'm Without a Girlfriend, This Letter to You, and Why Do Fools Fall in Love. In 1965, he started the band The Boss Five in Seattle, WA. Continuing his influence on Seattle's music scene, Jimmy was a popular Disk Jockey for Seattle's historic soul radio station, KYAC under the name Jimmy P.


James is preceded in death by his mother and father, his sister Carolyn Jackson, his son Jamil Pipkin, and his beloved granddaughter Tahlonya Pipkin.


The service will be held on June 10, 2022, at Damascus Missionary Baptist Church (5261 Rainier Ave South Seattle, WA 98118). The viewing will begin at 11:00 AM followed by the service at 12:00 PM.
