Janice Flaagan Obituary

WA - Janice Lynn Flaagan, a beloved youngest sister, preceded her 7 siblings succumbing to complications of malignancy on March 19, 2026. She was born January 16, 1953 in New Rockford, North Dakota to James Olie Flaagan and Jeanette Kennedy Flaagan, later of Grand Forks, North Dakota, who preceded her in death. Janice attended the University of North Dakota where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She moved to Seattle from North Dakota in 1972 and later resided in Edmonds. She joined the City of Seattle in 1987. She was regarded as a staple in the Human Resources in the Seattle Information Technology Department for 35 years. She had pride in the department's needs and understanding how the department and its employees could get what they needed within the rules and policies of the City. Janice impacted people's careers, suggested new opportunities, and helped guide and support their trajectory at the City. Her friends and colleagues noted that they celebrate her legacy.

Janice retired from Seattle IT in 2022. Her plans included attending as many sports games as possible, as she was known for being a die-hard Seattle sports fan. She missed the Sonics. The Seahawks, Mariners, and the UW women's softball team were lucky to have her cheering loudly for them. She had season tickets to the UW women's softball team. She could always be spotted in the office on Blue Fridays sporting favorite team attire, depending on the season - and if someone wasn't wearing that, she'd offer a friendly teasing jab. She was formerly a high school football referee. She was among the thrilled 12's to be here to celebrate the Super Bowl victory sporting a blue and green manicure. Upon retiring she had a second home in Arizona to be near snow-birding family and to be closer to her beloved Mariners during spring training.

Janice is locally survived by her significant other Howard Bonar; sister Carrie Sylvester and nephews Hunter, Alexander, and Forrest Sylvester. Noting that one of North Dakota's main exports is its young people, she is also survived by her brothers John Flaagan (Cupertino, CA), James Flaagan (Melbourne, Australia), Forrest Flaagan (Rapid City, SD and Mesa, AZ), Kent Flaagan (Kansas City, MO) and sisters Connie Anderson (St. Michael, MN) and Nancy Johnson (Wichita, KS). She was fond of her siblings' spouses and significant others. She doted on the next generation of seven additional nieces and nephews as well as 11 grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

There will be a private memorial later. Memorial contributions may be sent to Pasado's Safe Haven, P.O. Box 171, Sultan, WA 98294 or http/www.pasadosafehaven.org
