Jim Carey Obituary

Seattle, WA - In Loving Memory of James "Jim" Anthony Carey

May 12, 1940 - April 17, 2025

James "Jim" Anthony Carey passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025, surrounded by loved ones, at the age of 84. Born in Tacoma, Washington, on May 12, 1940, and raised in Seahurst, Jim lived a life filled with laughter, loyalty, and love.

A proud graduate of Seattle University, Jim spent his professional life as a dedicated and meticulous CPA. But beyond his career, Jim was defined by his deep friendships, his razor-sharp dry wit, and his ability to bring joy to those around him.

He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and faithfully attended Mass every Sunday for as long as he was able. His faith was a quiet but steady presence in his life, including the last, as he lived with Alzheimer's for 13 years with strength and grace.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ellen Carey, and his sister, Madelaine Ramey.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Carey; his daughters, Shannon Carey Eubank (Craig Carey Eubank) and Alysia Carey (Chris Cronas); and his four grandchildren, Mabry, Ajax, Shaw, and Senna, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his nephew, Mark Ramey, who held a special place in Jim's heart.

Jim cherished his friendships, many of which spanned back to his childhood. He was self-deprecating and humble, with a dry sense of humor that never failed to disarm and delight. His loyalty, compassion, and laughter made him a beloved companion and a storyteller you never forgot.

Of all his many passions, sailing held a special place in Jim's heart. He loved being on the water, charting trips around the Puget Sound and beyond, and sharing that love of the sea with family and friends from Shilshole Bay Y.C. Some of his favorite memories were spent on the boat, with blues music playing and a cold beer in hand. He also enjoyed skiing and passed that joy on to his family.

He was a devoted fan of Garfield High School basketball—so much so that he continued attending games for 25 years after his daughters graduated. He loved the energy and the community.

Jim was fun, fun-loving, and filled every room with a special kind of light that will be dearly missed.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday, June 14, 4:30 - 6:30 PM, at the Montlake Community Center. All who knew him are invited to join in sharing memories, laughter, and love in honor of a truly unforgettable man.
