John Henry Barber (Hank) Obituary

CA - John (Hank) Barber, 83, passed away on Saturday, January 31st 2026 after a long and courageous battle with prostate cancer. Born in Ardmore, Oklahoma to John and Helen Barber, Hank built a life defined by curiosity, exploration and the uncanny ability to recognize a beautiful moment.

After graduating from the University of Washington, Hank and wife, Christie, moved to New York city where Hank worked in advertising. After the birth of their first daughter, Katy, he and Christie moved back to Seattle where they welcomed their second daughter, Emily into the family. Hank worked in advertising and managed the Seattle branch of McCann Erickson where he enjoyed both the business and creative side of his work.

Hank was a man of many passions. He loved all things Italian, enjoying several extended visits to Tuscany where he cultivated his knowledge of Italian food, wine and culture. He loved hiking, skiing and foraging for mushrooms in the hills surrounding his cabin in Skykomish, Washington. His last great passion was for the California desert. After a few years of being snowbirds, Hank and Christie bought a home in Borrego Springs. Hank was a naturalist at the Anza Borrego State Park, leading many tours where he shared his knowledge of the flora, fauna, native sites and expansive vistas of the park.

Hank is survived by his wife of 60 years, Christie and daughters Katy Hanson (Bryce) and Emily Malate, four grandchildren, Eva, Audrey, Lincoln and Ruby, and brother, Phil Barber.
