WA - John Gerald Belford, 89, of Belfair, WA passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025, after a long battle with cancer.
John was born in Port Angeles, Washington, to Geraldine Fitzgerald Belford Howser and William Thomas Belford on June 23, 1935. Born and raised in Port Angeles, John graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1953, attended the University of Washington and served in the US Army.
His career in the maritime industry began with W. C. Nickum & Sons in San Francisco focused on a redesign of the Elwha class ferries. A waterfront executive, he rose to many leadership positions at the Port of Port Angeles, Port of Everett and Port of Seattle retiring in 1990.
John was known to greet with a firm handshake or arm around your shoulder with inviting charm and twinkle in his eye. His humor and quick wit would break the ice. Sometimes, he was even funny. He loved music, gourmet cooking (especially salmon), a glass of wine, good company and a waterfront view with family and friends. An Eagle Scout, he was comfortable rain or shine. John was warm and kind to all, truly interested in others, making them feel special.
To many he was a great fisherman enjoying 30 years, spring and summer, in Sitka, Alaska. Those adventure years in Sitka were a great joy and pride for him. He travelled the world to the fullest. Rest in peace Dad. You are dearly missed.
John was preceded in death by his parents; an older brother William Thomas, and sister Deborah Beckler.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Karen; son John Gerald II,(Petra, Christoph, Stephani and Colton); stepdaughters Sherell Ehlers, (Chris Knapp), Melissa Moore (Richard) and granddaughter, Chloe Rae Sakshaug who were with him his last days in the hospital.
In addition, he is survived by brother James (Sonja) and sister Maureen Dinius and includes beloved children and stepchildren as well as many, many grandchildren and great grands.
A small farewell gathering will be held at the Christ Lutheran Church Lodge on Saturday May 3rd (1:00 - 4:00 p.m.). A Memorial Party (90th Birthday Celebration) will be held on June 21st from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Gig Harbor Vintage Aero Museum, 1108 26th Ave NW, Gig Harbor, WA 98335.
