Washington - John (Jack) David Pennington, born September 17, 1924, passed away peacefully July 28, 2023 less than 2 months short of his 99th birthday. Born and raised in Puyallup WA, he served in the United States Navy, Seaman 1st Class, aboard the USS Wren 1943- 1946. Following WWII he earned a Doctor of Optometry. He worked in private practice then taught at Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He finished his career at Group Health Cooperative in Lynnwood WA where he held the post of Chief of Optometry. He met his future wife, Genevieve Gottberg while attending Pacific University Optometry School; they married November 25, 1949 and celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2019. They had four children, David, James (Jim), Nancy and John (Jack). Genny preceded him in death in 2020 as well as his first child, David, in 2005. Active in the outdoors, he skied, bicycled and hiked with friends and family. Jack and Genny traveled frequently after his retirement and Jack continued with his interest in photography, his camera was always with him when he was hiking and biking. Devoted to his family, he was admired and cherished. He was a strong man, always had a ready smile, kind and supportive words, he was gracious and seldom complained. He is survived by his children Jim, Nancy, son-in-law Robert (Bob) Zaneski, Jack, daughter-in-law Sharyl Pennington, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The family thanks the staff at Chateau Pacific Retirement Community, Swedish Edmonds Hospital, and Kaiser Permanente for the kind care given. Memorial services will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery.
