Tinker Sailor Soldier Spy. Mike Storie was born in Colfax, WA. Parents Howard Storie and Lois Stanke Storie moved to the Montlake neighborhood of Seattle as the family grew. Mike graduated from Garfield High School. He loved music and played the clarinet and the drums in high school. His music teacher introduced him to the comic operas of Gilbert & Sullivan that stayed with him for life. Mike started college at Washington State (then) College and was a lifelong Cougar.
An injury caused him to drop out of college. He was drafted and joined Army intelligence. As an ASA agent, he was trained in electronic interceptions and was in charge of a group in Berlin in 1960-1963 to monitor radio communications from Soviet agents at the height of the Cold War. His years in Berlin were an extraordinary experience in Mike's life.
Once home, he completed his studies at the University of Washington, earning degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. He worked for many years at a consulting firm providing computer and statistical support for major environmental studies. During these years, he met his life partner and wife, Rachel Garson, sailed competitively on the Victoria to Maui Race six times, and enjoyed Lake Union Duck Dodge nights with as many friends as could fit on his sailboat. He retired from the business and sailing worlds to pursue an earlier love, Gilbert & Sullivan musicals. He ran the local Society for 20 years and took the company to two international G&S festivals in Buxton, England. To cap his diverse career, he wrote his long-planned Berlin memoir "Spooks in the Woods", contributing to the network of the history of all those who served at the Berlin field station.
He is survived by wife Rachel; stepson Aaron Goodisman (Sandy, Alex and Vicki); his brothers Dennis Storie (Penny) and Brian Storie (April); many wonderful nieces and nephews, and their families; his remaining sailor friends; and the local theater community, all of whom feel like family.
A celebration for the Captain of the Pinafore will be held at a later date.
