Joy Eden Goodenough Obituary

Mount Vernon, Washington - Joy Eden Vanasse Goodenough, 85, of Seattle, WA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 27, 2021 after struggling with a rapid decline from dementia. Joy was welcomed into the world by her loving parents Sally and Ace Vanasse on June 28, 1936, in Seattle, WA. Eight years later, Joy was thrilled when her sister, Julianne arrived. The Vanasse family lived on Queen Anne and Joy graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1954. When she ventured off to Washington State College, Joy became a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority as a legacy. During homecoming week, Joy met a handsome guy named Bill Goodenough while working on a homecoming float. Joy and Bill both attended the Episcopal church, which would be a very important part of their relationship. They were married in 1956 at St Mark's Cathedral and celebrated their 65th anniversary in June.

Throughout her life, Joy gave countless hours of volunteer service to Seattle Milk Fund, Briarcliff PTA, the Alter Guild at the Church of Ascension and collaborated with friends to create the Magnolia Helpline. The Bike the Bluff fundraiser for Magnolia Helpline included Joy dressed in her clown costume pedaling away on her exercise bicycle at the starting point. Joy loved to encourage others to give and was so honored when Goodwin Connections (formerly known as Seattle Milk Fund) created the JOYful Giving campaign in her honor. When Joy became a grandmother, she loved to have her grandchildren and their parents attend special events at the Women's University Club. Joy was President of the Women's University Club, President of Seattle Milk Fund and held various offices in Pi Phi and PEO. If there was a need for someone to lead, Joy was there to help (or nominate someone else for the job).

Joy loved to send cards to family and friends. She was so happy to receive so many cards in the past months. They really brightened her day. Joy made an impact on those she met and was quick to make friends. Her love of life and family was strong. Joy will be missed by many.

Joy is survived in love by her husband Bill; their children Sara Vadset (Ted) and Tom Goodenough (Karin). She loved being known as Meema to her grandchildren Drew, Gus, Eden and Joey. Joy is also survived by her sister, Julie Vaux, nephew Bob Vaux and nieces Brooke Nibarger and Melissa McPherron.

To honor Joy, her family welcomes you to a memorial service on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 12pm at St. Mark's Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave E, Seattle. A reception will follow immediately after the service at the Lynnwood Convention Center, 3711 196th St SW, Lynnwood.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Goodwin Connections online: goodwinconnections.org or by mail: Goodwin Connections, 1631 15th Ave W, Ste 116, Seattle, WA 98119
