Keith Christian Obituary

Keith Christian, born April 30, 1938 in Ely, Minnesota to Ken and Helvi Christian, passed away peacefully at home next to his beloved wife on November 2, 2025.

Raised in the heart of Northern Minnesota's Iron Range and Boundary Waters canoe country, Keith was a skilled basketball player and starting football quarterback in high school and junior college. He earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and went on to receive a master's degree in the same field at the University of New Mexico. His career then took him from working at the National Laboratories to an inspiring chapter in the Peace Corps—where he traveled to Bangladesh, Iran, and South Korea, embracing new cultures and making lifelong friends.

In Iran, Keith met a German Peace Corps volunteer, Anke Capelle, and they married in Isfahan. Together they raised two sons in Seattle. He later earned a second master's degree in Urban Planning from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and had a distinguished career with the Peace Corps, the United Nations Development Programme, and as Managing Director of the Marine Division at the Port of Seattle.

An avid reader and passionate traveler, Keith hiked, climbed mountains, and bicycled across three continents, always seeking new horizons and the stories they inspired. His life was a tapestry filled with adventure, friendship, and family— and he cherished the relationships he cultivated over more than sixty years on the road and in his work. Keith also cared for his community, giving generously to local organizations whose missions he believed in and valued.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Crawford; his brother, Stan (Kathy) Christian; his late sister Lana Tuthill's husband, Gary Tuthill; his two sons, Lars (Silvia) Christian and Nils (Rebecca) Christian; and three grandchildren, Paulina, Filip, and Helvi; as well as step-children, John, Carmen, Dolores, and Sena; step-grandchildren, Riley, Star (who preceded him in death), Axl, and Estelle; nieces, nephews, and extended family members who loved him deeply. Keith's legacy is defined by his curious mind, an adventurous heart, and an enduring love for his family and friends—an inspiration to all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held on January 3, 2026 from 4:00-8:00pm at Wisteria Hall (2300 Arboretum Dr E, Seattle, WA 98112).

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations made in Keith's honor to PeaceTrees VietNam and Northwest Harvest, two Seattle-based organizations that held great meaning for him.
