Kenny G Down born October 18th 1961 in Lakeview, OR, he passed away in his Seattle home surrounded by his beloved family on May 5th 2024
Raised in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, Kenny grew up in the commercial fishing industry. At age 23, he was promoted to chief engineer. Kenny has been serving on the North Pacific Fishery Council for 9 years. He'd been a tireless advocate for hook and line fishing, and the crab fishing fleet. The council is stacked with Trawler biased members often leaving Kenny standing on his own to protect the resources and bottom habitat. From the time he went to work for the frontier fishing company and Bill Atkinson in the early 90s he realized the positive effect of catching fish with a hook and line versus the wasteful fishing practices caused by trawling. While managing the Frontier fishing company, Kenny along with others in the industry help create the Freezer Longline Coalition. Kenny became the first executive director of the FLC. He then became the CEO of Blue North Fishing Co. He worked with founders Mike and Pat Burns to modernize their fleet. It was during this time Kenny was appointed by Governor Inslee to be on the council. Kenny's moral compass and deep understanding of the many complex social, economic and ethical challenges facing our industry will leave a deep void to be filled.
Kenny had been a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, in good standing, for over 34 years. His heart's desire was carrying the message to the alcoholic who still suffered, speaking at conventions and leading retreats nationally. Kenny represented Alcoholics Anonymous at the 80th Founders Day convention in Akron, Ohio in 2023.
Kenny was also a published author, passionately writing of "the coming together time" for humanity, with instruction on how to leave behind our prejudices and put aside our differences. Please find his books and writings within newthoughtlife.org.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Shannon; son Jake, daughter Jessica; his parents Nannette Allen and John Down; brother Jeff Down, sister Becky Harding; uncle Ray Down, aunt Jo Graham; nieces Jennifer Down and Shannon Down, nephew Kersey Harding and grand-nephew Jace Down.
A memorial is scheduled for June 8 at the Daybreak Star Cultural Center at Discovery Park at 6:00 p.m. The address is 5011 Bernie Whitebear Way, Seattle 98199.
