Washington - Larry loved his wife, his family, his friends, his community, fishing, reading, collecting agates, birding, capturing the perfect photograph, and wearing shorts all year long.
Larry was born in Seattle and moved to the Shoreline area as a child. Larry earned a history degree from the University of Washington, where he also rowed crew. After graduation, Larry returned to Shoreline where he raised his own family and established a painting contracting business.
Larry was committed to community service. He was a soccer coach for ten years, a Little League softball coach, and an active member of Richmond Little League and Hillwood Soccer. Larry was part of the Little League group that led efforts for new facilities at Shoreview Park, was on the original ad-hoc committee that evolved into the Parks Recreation and Cultural Services Board, and was critical in the development of FC Shoreline, a select soccer program for players from Hillwood and Shorelake soccer clubs. In 1997 Larry coached the Panteras U-14 girls soccer team to a victory in the state tournament - the state title made even more special because Larry had coached most of the players since they were seven years old and called themselves the Pink Panthers. Larry received the SYSA (Seattle Youth Soccer Association) Legend Award in 2002 and the Shoreline Star award in 2005.
Larry was humble and had a great sense of humor. When Larry was named Grand Marshall for Celebrate Shoreline in 2004, he said it was because the first three people they asked turned them down.
In 2003 Larry joined the Masons and became a Master Mason that same year. He served as Master of the Greenwood Lodge in 2008. Each summer you could find Larry in the corn booth at the Evergreen State Fair raising money for the Shrine Hospitals.
Larry loved to fish! He enjoyed spending time at his place in Forks on the Bogachiel River with friends, family, and his beloved dogs Lexi and Britain. He looked forward to rafting/fishing on the Smith River in Montana and the guided and unguided rafting trips down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho. Trips to the village of Yelapa in Jalisco Mexico were high on his enjoyment list.
Later in life Larry renewed his interest in photography. Landscapes were his special gift.
Larry will be greatly missed by his wife of 50 years (Carol Rush); his son, Matthew (Kathy Jo) Blake and daughter, Susannah (William) Pounds and grandchildren, Sydney Blake, Georgia Blake, Quinn Pounds, and Beckham Pounds. He is also survived by his brothers John (Val) Blake and Jim Blake plus nieces and nephews.
Remembrances should be made to the Northwest Parkinson's Foundation or Evergreen Health Hospice Care.
A Celebration of Life will be planned for this Autumn.
