Washington - Letty appreciated beauty where ever she encountered it. She loved the towering evergreens and majestic mountains of Western Washington, her home for 60 years. She shared that love with her children and grandchildren through trips to beaches and parks when they were small and hikes in the mountains when they were older. She was an avid gardener who maintained lovely landscapes around her own homes as well as community gardens as a Master Gardener. She explored the art museums in every city she visited, took great joy in trips to the ballet, symphony, and opera with friends, and found solace in literature and poetry. And she loved to wear beautiful clothing!
She shared her passion for lifelong learning with her children, filling their home with books and taking them on outings to Seattle's parks and museums. She discovered an interest in science when she returned to school to study nursing, inspiring her to spearhead initiatives to encourage middle school girls to study math and science.
She was a baby-whisperer, who through her example and work as a post-partum nurse at Overlake Hospital, taught others how to nurture tiny humans.
Letty made wonderful lifelong friends in each community she lived in, especially her faith communities, Blessed Sacrament in Seattle and Sacred Heart in La Conner. She enjoyed food, wine, and laughter with her friends and was a steadfast companion in times of sorrow and suffering.
Her steadfastness, empathy, and capacity for unconditional love were daily gifts she bestowed upon her husband, children, and grandchildren. Her family is grateful that even in the last days of her long struggle with vascular dementia, when so much had been lost, there were still moments when that love shone in her eyes.
Letty was preceded in death by her sons Hugh and Mark. She leaves behind her husband Hugh Hafer, her brother Toby Kevin, her children Kevin Hafer, Mary Hafer, Paul Hafer, Anne Hafer, Elizabeth Clyatt, and Meg Satz, as well as twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
