Margaret Alvord Hughes (Nan) Obituary

Washington - Life-long learner, teacher and mother Margaret Ann (Nan) Alvord Hughes died November 27, 2021 at age 83 at her home in Lake Stevens, Washington.

Born September 23, 1938 in Seattle, she had lived in Idaho - Payette, Twin Falls, Pocatello and Lewiston before moving with her husband to Bothell in 1961. There, they published the Northshore Citizen weekly newspaper for 30 years.

She attended University of Idaho where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gama sorority. While raising four children, Nan earned four degrees at the University of Washington, a bachelor's in history and graduate degrees in education, library science, and women's studies. She was a reference librarian for many years in the King County Library System.

Nan taught elementary in Bothell, high school in Lake Stevens and Juanita and University at UPS, and the UW Seattle campus in women's studies. As a devoted advocate for education at all levels, she was supportive of her husband's 37-year direction of the Scholarship Foundation of Northshore.

Nan was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Bothell, Bothell Historical Society and Woodinville Heritage Society. She enjoyed time at their cabins on Camano Island and at Hayden Lake, Idaho and traveled extensively including trips to Scandinavia, China, Ireland, England, France, South Africa, and Italy. Politics, Books and PBS history dramas were her passion.

She is survived by her husband John B. Hughes and the families of her children Thomas Hughes (Seattle), Patricia Skinner (Seattle) and Walter Hughes (Lake Stevens). She was preceded in death by her daughter, Betsey Hughes, sister Betty Alvord Johansson, brother David Alvord, grandsons Bobby Skinner and Harley Hughes. Nan and her husband lived many years in Bothell and Woodinville before moving to Lake Stevens in 2020.

Remembrances are suggested to the Hughes Family Scholarship at P O Box 1773, Woodinville, WA 98072. A celebration of life is planned for next year.
