Marguerite F. Douglas Obituary

Renton, Washington - Marguerite Frances Douglas (nee Bowman)

Born Oct 21, 1920 to Alice & Porter Bowman in Wichita, KS - died Jan 8, 2021 at home in Renton, WA. Survived by her two children, Chelle Nelson and Michael Douglas, living in the greater Seattle area.

Oldest of 5, she outlived all her siblings and her husband, Dick Douglas. Marguerite lived a long and carefree life. She was never seriously ill in her 100 years.

She met Richard R. Douglas in high school in Wichita. Dick was quite the catch and a good provider. After they married in 1944, Dick graduated from the University of Oklahoma, became an engineer with Boeing and started their family in Wichita.

Mom was a beauty who loved to socialize. Dick and Marguerite danced, bowled, played bridge and golfed with their many friends in Wichita. When they moved to Seattle during the Worlds Fair in 1962, they took immediately to the Pacific NW lifestyle. The family bought a boat their 1st summer here and spent decades cruising the San Juan & Gulf Islands. Marguerite and the whole family enjoyed fishing in Puget Sound and skiing in the Cascades (though she mostly enjoyed apres skiing).

In 1965 Dick had the opportunity to work for Boeing in Munich, Germany. Marguerite and the whole family had a 3-year adventure in Europe, which was one of the highlights of our lives and which began a lifetime friendship with other Boeing families there, who we traveled and skied the Alps with. Marguerite became a discerning antique, copper & art collector while in Europe, filling future homes in Bellevue & Renton with her collectibles...she had a great flair for design & decor. Europe was also where she and Dick developed a taste for dry white wines.

Later, he and Marguerite spent winters in Arizona, continuing to make friends, dance and golf. When Dick died at 76, Marguerite continued to winter in AZ until she was 95. Her son would fly with her there and her daughter and son-in-law, Steven Corey, would bring her back home, where she lived on the Fairwood golf course in Renton. There she would drive her golf cart to Fairwood G&CC; to play bridge and golf with friends. She was an excellent bridge player and continued to play into her mid-90s. She also played golf most of her life, when not reading or playing bridge. She was proud of her 2 hole-in-ones and she would lord it over her husband who was maybe a better golfer, but had never had one.

Throughout her life, Marguerite was an avid reader. She would tell us how, as a child, she would hide in the cool cellar reading. Her sisters confirmed that, complaining that they were the ones doing the chores.

She enjoyed partying with her many friends, family and Chardonnay, up until her peaceful end.

When Marguerite turned 100, her response was her typical..."Good Grief!"

A long life, well lived and "filled to the brim". She was admired and loved by all who knew her. She will be missed.
