Washington - Marie Pearl Olmstead, beloved wife, mom, grammie and great-grammie, passed away while praying on February 3, 2022. Born in Ellensburg, Washington on July 26, 1936, her father moved the family to Seattle in 1942. Marie graduated from Highline High School in 1954, and from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene in 1958. While sailing on Puget Sound as a freshman, she met Charles R. Olmstead, and the rest was blessed history. They married on April 4, 1959. Marie and Chuck settled in Bellevue and had four children - Kim, Dean, and twins, John and Steve. Faith was her core, and she and Chuck joined First Presbyterian Church of Bellevue in 1966. Marie served as a deacon, elder, and on numerous committees right up to her passing. She was a proud committee member of the church's Memorial Garden and will be interred there. Marie balanced her family and her career, practicing dental hygiene one day a week for 22 years, with a great sense of humor and an I'm-blessed perspective. Her true calling was championing her family's many church, scouts, sports, and music activities. She was a founding member of the Bellevue Schools Foundation and sat on the board for many years, and active in PTSA and Booster Clubs at every school. When her kids were in college, Marie parlayed her skills into a 20-year career in fund development for Youth Eastside Services. Marie served on the boards of the Seattle Junior League, University Alumni Club, University of Washington Alumni Association, and the Women's Advisory Board of Swedish Hospital and Medical Center.
Marie was the consummate Husky. She cheered on her Dawgs, tailgated with the Dawg Pound on Saturdays, accumulated a wardrobe of purple and gold, and received two prestigious awards: UWAA Volunteer of the Year 1991-1992, and the UWAA Distinguished Service Award 2006. She was a proud member of the WIM Investment Club, and two simultaneous book clubs for years. Most of all, Marie was a devoted friend! Her diverse friendships included all ages, along with treasured college ("Shaggies") and church Bridge Club friendships that spanned over six decades. She and Chuck traveled the world, as well as visited family and friends. Marie was a prayer warrior, avid note writer, lover of the arts, gourmet cook, golfer, big sports fan, insatiable learner, and devoted to the people she loved.
Marie was all about family, wanting every member listed in her obituary. She is survived by her husband, Chuck Olmstead; daughter Kim Olmstead; sons and daughters-in-law Dean Olmstead and Laurie Leonetti, John and Drea Olmstead, and Steve and Janet Olmstead. Marie was blessed with 14 grandchildren: Jacob Olmstead and Cailey Neary, Lindy and Jake Monagle, Trevor and Jana Larsen, Shannon Olmstead and Mikala Shepherd; Michael, Aria, Savanna, Steven, Sophie and Olin Olmstead. She is survived by four blessed great-grandchildren: Damien, Jordan and Lavinya Monagle; Eleanor Larsen, and three on the way! She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, John and Nancy Bates, two nieces, Beth Bates and Becky Nelson, and grand-nephew, Thor Nelson. Her family and friends made her world.
Honoring Marie's passions for children, the homeless, and the University of Washington, donations can be made to Jubilee Reach, Seattle Children's Hospital, and the University of Washington Foundation Board. Her service will be held on April 30 at 2:00 p.m., at Bellevue Presbyterian Church.
