Marilyn Marguerite Lytle Obituary

Marilyn (Stone) Lytle died peacefully on January 24, 2024, at the age of 90. She was born in Spokane at the height of the depression in 1933. She began college at 16 at Ball State University in Indiana, graduating in 3 years with a degree in Music. Marilyn then earned a Master's in Psychology from Mills College in CA. While attending Mills she met her husband of 48 years, Dean Lytle, who was working on his PhD in Electrical Engineering at Stanford. After graduating, Marilyn joined Dean at Stanford and began work on her PhD in Child Psychology.

Despite a strong desire to finish her PhD, Marilyn was kept too busy managing the household, raising 4 daughters, and caring for her numerous elderly aunts. Marilyn was President of Roosevelt HS PTSA and a vital member of the Seattle School District's Desegregation Committee. Later, she provided more than 7 years of devoted in-home care to Dean until his death in 2003.

Marilyn had a love of adventure and a dare-devil spirit, leading her to travel the world and visit every continent. Each of her youngest 4 grandchildren accompanied her on numerous inter-generational Road Scholar trips including the Americas, the UK and Europe. She also traveled with various daughters on trips to New York, Chicago, Paris, Costa Rica, the Azores and Egypt. Marilyn was independent, opinionated, generous and fun, and possessed an expansive intellect and a curious nature.

Marilyn is survived by daughters Leslie Lytle, Heidi Benton (Tim), Alison Perrin (Steve), and Lisa Appelgate (Bruce) and 6 grandchildren, Michael, Mary, Eli, Ali, Claire and Grace. Her irrepressible spirit will live forever in the traits and values she instilled in her many loved ones. Following her lead, we will always vote, read, travel, enjoy the arts, and stand our ground.
