Marjorie Strand Weiss

On Tuesday, September 10, Marjorie S. Weiss passed away. Born Marjorie Helene Strand on January 27, 1932 in Yakima, Washington. She grew up in the town of Tieton, Washington with her sister, Shirley. When her brother was born, the family moved up the hill to a house flanked by apple and pear orchards. The family also spent a few summers in Seattle, and Marge would visit her grandmother in Fairfield, Washington. When Marge was sixteen, she and her grandmother took a train to New York City and then an ocean liner to Norway to visit relatives. After graduating from Highland High School, Marge attended College of Puget Sound (now UPS) and lettered in field hockey. During the summers, she worked as a bookkeeper at Paradise Lodge. She married Denny Anderson, and they moved to Seattle, where she worked at University Federal Savings and Loan until she had children.

Marge was always ready to help out. She was a member of the Aladdin Chapter of the Seattle Children's Home Society, and served as a Girl Scouts assistant troop leader for six years. For decades, she was an active member of and dedicated volunteer at University Congregational United Church of Christ. Later, she kept the books for the Horizon House Monday Market. Marge also remained active in Strand Apples, the fruit growing and packing business that her parents founded.

As a mother, Marge worked to expand her daughters' interests through church choir, scouting, and lessons in piano, flute, skiing, and horseback riding. She took her daughters to Norway and Denmark and to the 1974 Expo in Spokane, Washington. She was generous and loving and a would tell you if you messed up. When her marriage ended, she returned to the workforce as a bookkeeper while she continued to volunteer. She married Bob Weiss, and she traveled around the U.S. and to Scandinavia and France. Soon after her second marriage, to Bob Weiss, ended, Marge became a grandmother, and she leaned into it fully. She was always present for and much loved by her grandson and granddaughter, watching over them, giving them rides to soccer practices, and taking them to church.

Marge made the flakiest pie crusts, and she hosted Christmas and Easter family dinners into her eighties. While she became quite the city person, a part of her heart stayed in Tieton. She loved to visit and to ride with her brother to the orchards to see how the crop was coming along. Marge is survived by her daughters, Joannie Stangeland and Nancy Anderson; and her grandchildren, Daniel and Claire Kervran. She will be deeply missed.
