WA - Mark Flotlin, 71, a beloved educator, devoted family man, and lifelong champion of young people, passed away in the early morning hours of November 3, 2025.
Born on April 8, 1954, in Seattle, Washington, Mark was the son of Milt and Teresa Flotlin. He grew up in North Seattle, where he attended Saint Matthews and Bishop Blanchet High School. His pursuit of education led him to the University of Washington, where he earned his undergraduate degree and Masters of Education degree. While studying for his undergrad he met the love of his life, Reggie. They married in 1978 and raised three children together.
Mark dedicated his career to shaping young minds and building strong school communities. He began as a math teacher at Explorer Middle School in the Mukilteo School District in 1977. He became an administrator for the Monroe School District for 2 years before returning to Mukilteo to serve as principal of Olympic View Middle School and finally, completed his career where he started, as principal of Explorer Middle School. For thirty years he was known for his unwavering commitment to both students and staff.
A thoughtful man of deep principles, Mark also found great joy in the small things in life. He possessed an extraordinary gift for trivia and could recall obscure facts with remarkable precision. He loved the open road with an old-school paper map. Mark was also a dedicated band and sports dad who rose before dawn for rehearsals, coached teams, and traveled with the Seattle Cascades Drum & Bugle Corps. He championed education, arts and sports programs in his schools with the same fervor he brought to supporting his own children's endeavors. After he retired he found the same joy in attending and supporting the games and performances of his grandchildren.
Also during retirement Mark and Reggie enjoyed their Whidbey beach house, even adding a second story with the help of family and friends. Mark loved woodworking and all kinds of home improvement projects. Another important part of retirement life was the friendships found (and donuts) at the YMCA Pedaling for Parkinson's group.
He was well-read, an excellent writer, and a gifted orator who could command a room. His quick wit and appreciation for a well-timed zinger made him wonderful company, and his warm sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him.
Above all, Mark loved his family with his whole heart. He is preceded in death by his parents, Milt and Teresa Flotlin. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Regena Polcuch Flotlin; his children, Heidi Davis (Jason), Gregg Flotlin (Amanda), and Kelsey Cameron (Loren); his siblings, Douglas Flotlin (Rotchiel) and Maria Blair (Rick); his five cherished grandchildren, Louisa, Georgia, Amelia, Graeme, and Quincy as well as six nieces and nephews and many beloved friends and family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the Weyerhaeuser Room at the Everett Train Station, 3201 Smith Avenue (4th Floor), Everett, WA 98201. All who knew and loved Mark are welcome to attend.
