Mary Ellen Hughes Obituary

We have lost a loving mother, devoted wife, and loyal friend. Mary Ellen Hughes passed away peacefully with her family by her side on October 14, 2023; she was 89. Born Sept. 24,1934 in Seattle, WA to Theiline and Paul Pigott, Mary Ellen was the fifth of six children. She was a graduate of The Madeira School in McLean, Virginia and the University of Washington, where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. She married Patrick Hughes on January 18, 1958 and they had five children.

Mary Ellen was a quiet philanthropist who gave generously to promote education, the arts and medical research. Hundreds of students had their educations enhanced by her anonymous generosity, just the way she liked it. She was active in the Seattle Junior League, the Seattle Garden Club and the Seattle Tennis Club. She served on several boards including Seattle Children's Hospital, The Lakeside School, The Seattle Children's Theater and was an early member of the Seattle Repertory Theater Board.

Mary Ellen's life was active and full. One of her great passions was UW Husky football — she rarely missed a game. She was also a great fan and supporter of the Husky Women's Crew. She was an avid tennis player, downhill skier, and loved the game of bridge. And she baked a mean chocolate chip cookie from her secret family recipe! Mary Ellen was unassuming, friendly to all, and a friend for life to those who knew her. She enjoyed time spent with family and friends on Lopez Island, as well as Maui. Mary Ellen was happiest when all her family were around and loved to plan a family member's significant birthday party or unique family vacation.

Mary Ellen is survived by her husband, Pat; her children, Lauri Hughes, Kimberly Hughes Moazed (Steve Moazed), Jim Hughes (Heather) and Kevin Hughes (Krista); as well as ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Women Helping Women (Maui) https://www.womenhelpingwomenmaui.com/; the Lopez Island Family Resource Center (Lopez Is) https://lifrc.org/, or a charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life mass will be held at St. James Cathedral, Seattle, Thursday, October 26 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow.
