Maureen Kirk Obituary

CA - Maureen Kirk, née Murphy, passed away unexpectedly in Chico, California, on November 23, 2025, from complications due to a brain hemorrhage. She was surrounded by members of her immediate family during her final moments. Her passing leaves an enormous void for her relatives, friends, and many members of the Northern California community, from whom she earned tremendous respect and admiration.

Maureen was the oldest of five children, and had a penchant for making sure that her younger siblings did not forget her seniority. Born on November 18, 1947, to John and Rosemary Murphy in Seattle, Washington, Maureen graduated from Blanchet High School. She received a degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Washington, where she met fellow UW Husky, Larry Kirk. They were married on July 18, 1970. They recently celebrated 55 years of marriage.

Larry's biochemistry professorship took them to various locations over the years. They settled in Chico in 1981, where she continued her career in dental hygiene. Their lives were brightened with the birth of their son Brian in 1985. Maureen loved being a mom and returned to Seattle regularly while Brian was growing up. She was overjoyed when Brian married Brittany Catton. And nothing made her happier than being a grandmother to their two sons.

Maureen lived a life of community commitment. In 1994 she was appointed to the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission. This was followed by elections to the Chico City Council in 1998 and 2002. Maureen then served as Chico mayor from 2002 to 2004. Starting in 2006, she served on the Butte County Board of Supervisors for her district.

Praise for Maureen's service as an elected representative crossed political affiliations and philosophies. Words such as "unity," "poise," "dedication," "trustworthy," "approachable," and "integrity" are found in many of the tributes offered by her fellow representatives, colleagues and constituents.

Maureen is survived by her husband Larry; son Brian, daughter-in-law Brittany; and grandsons Callen (age 9) and Bowen (age 7). She cherished Brian's family and loved opportunities to spend time with them. She was a constant source of love, care, and support.

Maureen is also survived by brothers Terry Murphy (Rosalie D'Amico), Kevin Murphy (Karen Freeman); sister-in-law Lynda Bunting; and nephew Frederick Murphy, Lynda's son. She is preceded in death by her brothers Lee and Timothy.

Her wit, compassion, and style of engagement will be greatly missed.
