Peter Steffen Haug Obituary
Peter Steffen Haug An exemplary dad, husband, brother, friend, GOLFER, engineer, card player, fisherman, philanthropist, storyteller, rain gauge monitor, trombonist, master direction giver died just shy of his 97th birthday on November 8, 2025. Pete was born in Seattle, Washington, the product of a mixed marriage. His Swedish mother, Gladys Manson was born on Vashon Island and lived to 105. His father, Andrew Haug immigrated from Norway. He had an older brother, Irving and a younger sister, Andrea. The Haug family grew up in the Ravenna neighborhood and the three kids attended Roosevelt High School. Peter began his college education at Washington State University, but after enduring the unnecessary cold east of the mountains, he returned to finish his undergraduate studies in engineering and business at the University of Washington. It was during this time that he was set up on a blind date with Patsy Young from Wenatchee. The relationship blossomed, they fell in love and married in 1953. Son Jeffrey was born in 1956, daughter Lisa in 1957. They raised their family in Sand Point Country Club. Jeff died tragically in 1978. They sold their family home in 1980 spending more time at the beach house near Gig Harbor where they loved fishing, beach combing and pickleball with many loved ones; then winter months on Maui where they built two homes together, enjoyed golf with dear Wailea friends, New Year's Eve parties, and most Christmases for 35 years. They moved into Skyline in downtown Seattle in 2012. Pete spent his noteworthy career at Manson Construction, earning a commemorative 75 year watch when he retired from the board at 90. He loved his work the innovation, the people it introduced him to and the places it allowed him to visit. Until his last days, he spoke proudly of Manson and loved hearing about the company's latest projects and accomplishments.
He loved his family and friends and GOLF (for 80+ years). He shot his age more than 350 times and had 10 holes in one! He truly enjoyed golfing as often as possible and was a proud member of Sand Point Country Club, Seattle Golf Club and Wailea Golf Club.
For 68 wonderful years, he shared his life with Pat, defined by respect, fun, and enduring love, marked by daily laughter, gentle affection, and the ability to find joy in quiet, ordinary moments. A rare and gentle man, Pete was interesting and interested. He exhibited a quiet strength his family and friends relied on and admired. He was honest and decent, friendly, always dapper and well dressed. Open to trying most anything, he would say enthusiastically, "Why not? What the hell?"
Pat died in 2021 at age 90. Pete was fortunate to enjoy four more wonderful winters golfing on Maui with the help and care of family and friends, especially his extraordinary companion and caring assistant Maria Stobie and our friend Jerry Watson who came on Sundays to make him breakfast and watch sports. Affectionately known to many as "Daddio", Peter is survived by "best daughter ever" Lisa Haug and her ever steady husband Amado Shuck; beloved nieces and nephews; and countless friends. After Jeff died, Pete and Pat created a memorial fund at Lakeside School in their son's name. Pete also created two scholarships with the Western Golf Association Evans Scholars Foundation.
Remembrances in his name could be made to either or to any good cause that moves you.
We will celebrate Daddio's marvelous life on Sunday, April 26 at 3:00 PM at Seattle Golf Club. Bright colored clothing is encouraged, think Maui! If you plan to attend, please RSVP ASAP to: phaug@aol.com
