Philip Charles Malte, beloved husband, brother, father and grandfather, passed away at the age of 82 on March 23, 2024. While Phil had a long, good life, it was far too short for those who loved him.
Phil was born on June 17, 1941 in Buffalo, NY, to Victor Philip Malte and Mildred Emma Malte, and spent his early years in the mid-West with his parents and brother Robert Andrew Malte. Phil eventually ended up at the University of Michigan for his undergraduate and doctorate degrees, and his love of U-M resulted in a tendency to sing "Hail to the Victors" at the drop of a hat. During this time, Phil met and fell in love with Patricia, his wife of sixty years. Together they had two kids, Dean and Carol, and moved west where Phil became a professor of Mechanical Engineering, teaching first at Washington State University and then at the University of Washington. What Phil's family remember most about his work is how much joy he took in mentoring and working alongside his students.
Phil loved having his family around him, whether for family dinners, yearly vacations in the San Juan Islands, or sharing the day to day with Patricia. As a father, he imparted his love of family, deep concern and respect for others and the planet, and joy in learning to his kids. He was an amazing "Poppop" to his two grandkids, Theo and Indigo, whom he adored. They will remember his goofiness, his kindness, and how much pride he took in them. We will all carry him with us.
Phil is survived by his wife, children, brother, and grandchildren.
