Robert J. Doran (Bob) Obituary

The Honorable Robert J. Doran (Ret.) passed away after an illness on January 5, 2024. Bob was born July 20, 1931, to Thomas "Tod" and Loretta Doran in Butte, Montana. A decorated four-star athlete and honors student at Butte Central High School, Bob was quarterback and point guard for the football and basketball teams. Interested in law from a young age, he received BA and JD degrees from Gonzaga University, taking time off for military service as a First Lieutenant/Assistant Adjutant at Fort Lewis. After passing the bar exam, he worked at the Washington State Attorney General's Office in Olympia, rooming with a group of young associates who became life-long friends and golf buddies. One day, a pretty secretary, Michelle LeMay, caught his eye. It was love at first sight. Bob and Michelle married on April 8, 1961. Their first child, Heather, arrived two years later, followed by daughters Robbi and Tessa. Bob rose to Deputy Attorney General before being appointed to the Thurston/Mason County Superior Courts in 1971. In 1977, he made a landmark ruling, The Doran Decision, that cemented his reputation as an esteemed jurist—that the state should provide basic education for all students. He served on the bench for 22 years, receiving the Washington Jurist Award in 1992, and chairing numerous boards, including the Code of Judicial conduct Task Force, as well as United Way and Lions Club. Upon his retirement, Bob mediated cases for JAMS, enjoyed golf, cheering on the Zags, Huskies, and grandchildren's sporting events, and spending time with family and friends. After the unexpected loss of his beloved Michelle on January 25, 2011, he honored her memory by teaching himself to make batches of her applesauce and blackberry jam, and hosting soirees and holidays. Always ready with a dry-witted quip and twinkle in his eye, he was an exceptional father, grandfather, friend, brother, colleague, and mentor to all who knew him and will be deeply missed. Bob is survived by his sister, Leticia Pericin; daughters Heather (Mark) Barbieri, Robbi (David) Anderson, and Tessa (Ron) Effland; grandchildren Sian (Julian) Williams, Connor (Swarna) Barbieri, and Sera Barbieri; Téa and Toran Effland; Joseph, Lily, and Michael Anderson, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers Tod and James Doran. A celebration of Bob's life/mass will be held on February 2, 2024, at noon at Saint Michael Parish, 1208 11th Ave SE, Olympia. A reception, 1:30 p.m. 1889 Prime Steakhouse, 406 5th Ave SW, Olympia will follow. Donations to the Thurston County Foodbank can be made in Bob's memory.
