Shaun Kerry McMahan Obituary

Kerry was born in 1936 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the second of three kids from William and Rainier McMahan. He passed away peacefully on October 18th at the age of 87. The family moved to Mercer Island in 1942 and later relocated to Queen Anne in 1946, where he developed his life-long affection for Queen Anne High School where he met the love of his life in 1951 and wife of 40 years, Barbara Caldwell. A dedicated alumnus, he co-founded the Queen Anne Alumni Association and chaired the scholarship committee for its entirety, demonstrating his commitment to education and community.

After studying journalism at the University of Washington, where he showcased his talent as a political cartoonist for the Daily, Kerry embarked on a remarkable 50-year career at Boeing. He played an important role as procurement manager for a portion of the Saturn V rocket program in Huntsville, Alabama, then back to Seattle for the Lunar Rover program, the PHM jetfoil program, and many more, including BOECON up in Prudhoe Bay, AK. He was also a founding committee member that developed and built the Museum of Flight.

Beyond his professional achievements, Kerry was a passionate advocate for youth sports. He founded the Wedgwood Bantam Jr. football team and coached for 11 years, leading the team to several city championship games. His involvement in the PTA earned him the prestigious Golden Acorn award, reflecting his dedication to the community and education.

Kerry was a life-long diehard Husky football and basketball fan, even playing for the third team his freshman year, before it was cut short for a major injury. A 40-plus year season ticket holder for football and 20-plus for basketball, there were rarely quiet days at the house in the fall and winter.

He spent some time as a broadcaster with Viacom channel 3 and did Husky crew races and high school football in the late 70s and early 80s.

A proud member of the Seattle Yacht Club for 66 years, Kerry was an active participant, chairing various committees and fostering many friendships over that time, outliving many.

Kerry was a tremendously dedicated husband, father and grandfather to his three children, Erin Gamble, Mary Parsons, (Les), and Shaun Jr, (Debbie); and eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Barbara (1998); his brother Patrick (2013), and sister Kathleen (2021).

He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his community, his passion for education, and his love for family and friends.

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, November 1st , from 2-5 at the Seattle Yacht Club.
