Washington - Stephen Edward Marvich passed away on the 18th of August, 2025 after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his three sons, Joe, Kyle and Dana, ex-wives Kate Baker and Kristine Wittman, his loving partner at the time of death, Paulette Edgbert, siblings Detta, Mike and John as well as many relatives and long-time friends.
Steve was born on January 22nd 1950 in Seattle, Washington, the son of Clarence and Detta Marvich. The family moved to Mercer Island when Steve was young. Clarence was an electrician and Detta was a homemaker. Clarence learned to do electrical work in the Navy during the second world war and worked as an electrician when Steve was a boy. From a young age, Clarence would take Steve along with him to wire houses. During this time, Steve developed his work ethic and gained a foundational understanding of electrical work. After graduating from Mercer Island High School in 1968, he attended the University of Washington and later earned a law degree from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma all while working as an electrician on the side. After graduating, he practiced law for a short time but felt a stronger calling toward electrical work so he decided to quit working as a lawyer and focus on his own business. In 1972 he started "Steve Marvich Electric" or SME for short. Over forty plus years the business grew in size to become one of the larger electrical contracting companies in Seattle.
In the late 70's, Steve met and fell in love with Kate Baker. They married in 1980 and divorced several years later. Not long after, he met Kristine Wittman and they married in 1988. Kristine had a son, Joseph, from a previous marriage who Steve would legally adopt. In 1989 and 1991 they had two more children, Kyle and Dana Marvich together. After 31 years of marriage filled with love, lots of sailing, many highs and some lows, Steve and Kristine separated and divorced in 2019. Afterward, Steve moved to his final residence in Shelton, Washington where he met Paulette Edgbert and many special friends and neighbors. Together Steve and Paulette shared many experiences, and tackled projects on Steve's home. One of the highlights of their time together was a trip to Croatia where they visited Steve's grandfather's childhood homeland. Paulette was by his side in his final days.
Steve had a long list of hobbies, including fishing, sailing, skiing, playing basketball, making wine in his basement and numerous others. He was also passionate about his work and the people he worked with. Steve's main strength in business was his ability to build strong relationships with both his employees and clients, he was honest and fair and others could see that through his words and his actions. He was humble about his success and often attributed it to those around him. His friends and loved ones will remember him as a fun loving guy with a big heart and a great sense of humor.
There will be a memorial service for Steve at the Ballard Elk's Lodge on Saturday, November 22nd from 2pm to 6pm. One final safety meeting. All are welcome.
