WA - Sue "Fran" Stinchcomb Schmitt, died peacefully on January 15, 2026. Fran was born on October 17, 1938, in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Robert and Esther Stinchcomb. Fran received a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Miami University and a Master of Arts in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin. On August 20, 1960, Fran married David Schmitt in Worthington, Ohio. In 1961, Fran took part in the Freedom Rides Civil Rights Movement. Fran taught Psychology/Social Psychology at North Seattle College for over 35 years, receiving many awards and accolades for her expertise and commitment to teaching and learning. Fran was instrumental in founding the Women's Studies program at NSC, and Fran team taught in many interdisciplinary courses sharing her craft across the campus. Fran's students were eternally grateful for her dedication to their learning and concern for them as individuals. Fran and Dave enjoyed many outdoor activities including cycling through Europe and traveling to places such as Costa Rica, Japan and Greece. In retirement, Fran joined the Seattle Shores Chorus in 2009 also performing as part of The Seattle Reign Quartet. A phenomenal singer, she was cherished by her fellow chorus members. At her Lake Forest Park, WA home, Fran made her wooded surroundings a garden sanctuary for native plant species and her beloved birds, in whose company she delighted. Fran read extensively in American history and enjoyed attending live theater. Fran was an avid supporter and fan of both the Seattle Mariners and Seattle Seahawks. Fran was treasured as a friend for her intellect, her honesty, her lively company and her endless kindness. Fran will be deeply missed by many students, colleagues, family and friends. Later in 2024, Fran moved to be closer to her daughter, Alison and grandsons, Jarrett and Brenden in Vancouver, WA where she spent endless time with them for many celebrations which she cherished and loved. Fran is preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, David Schmitt, who passed away on July 3, 2020. Fran is survived by her daughter, Alison Schmitt and her two grandsons, Jarrett and Brenden Seelbinder, all of Vancouver, WA and her son, Reed Schmitt of Spokane, WA. A celebration of life will be held a later date.
