Teruko "Terry" Marlatt Obituary

Nevada - Teruko "Terry" Marlatt passed away peacefully on May 10, 2022, age 95, in Reno, NV. Terry was born on Bainbridge Island, Washington, on February 21, 1927 to parents Zenhichi and Shiki Harui. They owned the famed "Bainbridge Gardens", which is still owned and operated by the Harui family today. The Harui family's love of plants and nature was apparent in Terry's garden as well. She never visited family or friends without taking a clipping or plant from her garden.

Terry was the only daughter of five Harui children. She had an adventurous spirit that allowed her to hold her own amongst her four brothers. Art, Norio and Junkoh Harui preceded Terry in death, as well as her parents.

At the age of twelve, Terry and oldest brother, Art, journeyed to Japan where she graduated from high school. Due to ongoing WWII, Terry was unable to return to the United States. After the war she worked for the U.S. Army as an interpreter until her eventual return in 1947.

Upon her return to Seattle, Terry held many interesting jobs, including that of Gift Shop Merchandiser at the "Outrigger" Restaurant. Her warm smile and caring personality caught the eye of Stewart Marlatt, Jr. and they married in 1960. They made their home in Kirkland, WA and were blessed with three beautiful children; Douglas, Darrell, and Tracy. Terry was their "#1 fan", never missing a little league game or ballet recital. To ensure she could provide "chauffeur" duties for the children, Terry obtained her first driver's license in her mid-forties.

Terry and Stew enjoyed many adventures together. They moved their family to Palm Springs, CA in 1976. They owned and operated the "Hickory Farms" store in the Palm Springs Mall until the late 1980's. Terry's creativity and generous nature was the perfect recipe for all of the beautiful gift baskets she assembled over the years.

After retirement, Terry and Stew moved to Carson City, NV and then on to Reno in 1993. She enjoyed playing the card game "Dimes", joining friends for weekly lunches, and fun at local casinos.

Terry loved animals. Her kind spirit and quiet nature will be dearly missed. She is survived by her loving husband, Stewart; sons Douglas and Darrell Marlatt; daughter, Tracy Boland (Chris); Grandson, Jake Boland; brother, Hiro Harui (Kimiko); sister-in-law, Barbara Janssen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private services are to be scheduled at a later date. Please make memorial contributions to an animal welfare organization of your choice.
