Washington - Dr. Thomas Raymond Taylor, born in Paisley, Scotland January 23, 1935. Passed away on June 15, 2024 in Kirkland, Washington surrounded by his family.
Tom was a devoted father and grandfather, a loving husband, a doctor, a professor at the University of Washington, and a larger-than-life character in his humor. Always willing to help out and offer advice, Tom's favorite message was to "learn to fail." He was honest, caring, and thoughtful in line with his Catholic faith and values. He loved spending time with his family, entertaining friends with his many jokes, and enjoying art and music, preferably with a good Scottish whisky in-hand.
Tom grew up in Paisley, Scotland and graduated from the University of Glasgow Medical School in 1957. His far-ranging interest in child development led him to obtain boards in psychiatry, neurology, and internal medicine. He earned his MB ChB in 1957 and his PhD in 1972. Tom met his first wife, Elaine, in Glasgow, and they married in in 1960. They emigrated to Montreal, Canada where he practiced medicine at McGill University from 1976-1979. In 1979 they moved to Seattle. At the University of Washington, Tom led groundbreaking research in the Family Medicine department and worked in the Pain Clinic until his full retirement at the age of 80. Tom was an avid learner and teacher. He attended art school while in medical school and continued painting as a lifetime hobby.
Tom was predeceased by his first wife, Elaine (2002), and his parents, John and Catherine Taylor.
Tom met and married his second wife, Elizabeth Mackenzie, in Seattle in 2005. They lived in Kirkland and enjoyed travelling and retired life together.
He will be missed in immeasurable ways by his wife Elizabeth; his daughters Pauline (Brian) and Helen; his grandchildren Owen and Lainey; his stepchildren Joanna (Tony), Sara (Paul), and Helena (Colin) and step-grandchildren Lauren, Nicolas, Eliza, Sydney, Theo and Will; and his family in England, brother Robert (Anne) his sister Katie and his nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by his extended family and friends in Kirkland and the UK with whom he shared memories for many decades.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date.
