Wallace Nelson Obituary

WA - Wallace Nelson was born during the "Roaring Twenties" of Swedish immigrant parents - Ted and Charlotte Nelson. He grew up during the Great Depression and graduated from Broadway High School in Seattle. During World War II Wallace served in the Army Air Corps as a "flyboy" with the 98th bomb group. He then earned a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Washington. Wallace served as a medical officer during the Korean war with the USN, USPHS, and with the USCG aboard the icebreaker NORTHWIND. While training in general surgery at the Virginia Mason hospital, he met and married a vivacious young student nurse: Shirley McDougall. Further training in neurological surgery at the University of Washington was followed by a very active career - primarily at Swedish Hospital, Children's Orthopedic Hospital, and Cabrini Hospital. He was appointed clinical associate professor in neurological surgery at the University of Washington and was a visiting neurosurgical consultant to the government of Singapore. He participated in the startup of Singapore's first neurosurgical unit. He was a founding member of the Washington State Association of Neurological Surgeries, of Northwest Neurological Surgery Inc., and the Multi-Specialty Panel.

Wallace is preceded in death by his sister Ruth Gould and his beloved wife Shirley. Wallace and Shirley had four children. Wallace is survived by his children Gregory (Jian), Jeffrey (Nancy), Susan Korvell (Bob), Teresa King (Adam). Wallace has nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He lived his final years at his ranch in the upper Satsop Valley.
