Born in Salem, Oregon, Ward earned a BA from Willamette U and an MD from U of Pennsylvania. In 1954 he began work at Group Health Co-op on Seattle's Capitol Hill, later helping open their Burien Clinic and Olympia Medical Center. In Seattle he lived in Madrona, was active in University Friends Meeting, and sang in St. Mark's Cathedral's Compline Choir.
