WA - (93) born Aug. 4, 1932 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Moved to Seattle in 1941.
Graduated from Lincoln High School and attended the University of Washington. Began his hotel career with Westin International Hotels with extended assignments in Portland, OR and Los Angeles, CA. He returned to Seattle in 1971 and finished his hotel career as vice president and controller in the corporate headquarters. Until moving to the Mirabella retirement community in downtown Seattle he resided in Lake Forest Park for more than 37 years.
He was active in civic and business affairs. In Portland he was involved with the Chamber of Commerce, the National Office Management Assn. and was co-founder of the Portland chapter of the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals. In Los Angeles he served as the president of the L.A. chapter of HFTP before moving on to serving as president of the international organization. He also served multiple years as president of the Century City Kiwanis Club.
Returning to Seattle he was involved with Junior Achievement, teaching the free enterprise system in Seattle middle schools for seven semesters. He served on the board for Private Initiative for Public Education (PIPE); the advisory board of the Seattle Social Development Project, a University of Washington research project. He served on the Hospitality Advisory Council for Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island and participated in their Executive-in-Residence program. He lectured to hospitality classes at Washington State University and Seattle University. When Westin was a subsidiary of United Airlines he served on the board of the United Airlines Employees Credit Union for ten years with one year as chairman. At the time it was the largest industrial credit union in the United States. During retirement he was treasurer of the Westin Alumni Assn.
He had a life-long interest in sailing and one of his greatest pleasures was solo sailing on Puget Sound. Another personal pleasure was getting acquainted with new restaurants and having lunch with cherished friends. He traveled nationally and internationally, both during his career and with his wife after his retirement. They spent six winters in Tucson, AZ.
Bill was predeceased by his wife of fifty-two years, Catherine; and two sisters and a brother. He is survived by his son, David, an accomplished classical guitarist in Los Angeles.
